Petland Canada has come to the conclusion that, with many towns and cities legislating a ban on selling pets and people picketing outside their stores, it was time they announced a change in policy. Petland Canada announced on September 9 they will no longer sell puppies and kittens in their stores. This is great news from Canada!

But what about Petland USA?  Why no turnaround? Let’s join pet-loving voices from around the world until we are heard in America too!

Petland USA stores get 95% of their puppies from puppy mills. HSUS investigators visited 21 stores in Florida, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and elsewhere and checked the transport records tracing the origin of 17,000 puppies shipped to Petland stores. It was the largest investigation of its kind to date. Wayne Pacelle remarked in his follow-up post, More Evidence of Petland-Puppymill Enterprise : “In fact, more than 80 of Petland’s outlets were found buying from the Hunte Corporation alone, a massive Missouri broker that traffics in approximately 80,000 puppies a year.”

Investigators visited Petland’s breeders to check living conditions and found that most had hundreds of cages of dogs that were never walked or socialized, stinking of urine, living lives of desperation.

A cross-check of USDA investigation records was conducted that confirmed abuse and repeat abuse by Petland’s suppliers – the same suppliers they tell customers are “family breeders”.  HSUS reported “One facility in Minnesota provided such a lack of adequate care, according to a USDA inspection report, that a dead dog and puppy weren’t removed in a timely manner. Despite the serious violations, Petland stores continue to buy from these unscrupulous mills.”

This is not old news. This is unfinished business, an on-going project that requires your help, your interest, your passion for the welfare of animals, and perhaps most of all your persistence.  If we in the animal loving family can’t do this, who will?
