ALDF: Expose Animal Abusers

Does an animal abuser live in your neighborhood? Those who abuse their pets often reside unnoticed within communities, wreaking havoc on the lives of the animals they torment. Even if convicted of their heinous crimes, they only go on to obtain more animals to repeat their behavior.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund recommends an Animal Abuser Registry, much like “Megan’s Law” for sex offenders. Such a registry would help to prevent repeat offenders. Demand that your own state require an animal abuser registry by signing the petition.

Why it matters
Animal abuse does not happen in a vacuum. Abusers do not stop with one animal. Additionally, a link between animal abuse and violence against people has been well-documented.
The abuse of animals involves torture, molestation, mutilation, starvation, killing; also painful, prolonged death due to neglect or hoarding. An Animal Abuser Registry would:
- Enable pet dealers, shelters, individuals to avoid selling to those convicted of felony abuse
- Empower law enforcement with appropriate knowledge and awareness
- Add greater protection to community; animal abusers are often involved in property crimes and violence against others
- Provide precise information regarding animal abuse (numbers of abusers, types of crimes)
- Alert neighbors to know if they should be extra-cautious for the safety of their own pets
A registry would not only provide the necessary information to avoid contributing to repeat offenders, it would also help to create safer communities. For the sake of the abused animals, your neighbors, maybe even your own pets – demand your state require abusers to register with an Animal Abuse Registry!
