Bully Breed Rescue
Did you know that rescues work with shelters to help keep pit bulls alive? There are a handful of dedicated non-profit organizations that spend their lives doing just that. How would you like to help them save pit bulls?
Bully Breed Rescue of New Canaan, CT reports that of an estimated 3 million pit bulls in the US, approximately 1 million, including puppies, are killed each year. Bully Breed Rescue notes that 1 in 600 pit bulls get adopted. Take pity on the Pitties; they need your help!

Why It Matters
Only a handful of pit bulls are adopted from animal care and control facilities, many of which automatically destroy them (BSL, or internal non-adoption policies). For the last ten years, the number of pit bulls entering the shelter system has increased. A survey taken in 2000 by ASPCA shows 46 representative urban shelters reported more than 20% of their population was pit bull/pb mix, taking in between 3000 and 7500 per year ((Petfinder.com). The national average today is estimated to be 33%.
Pit bulls are difficult dogs to keep in a shelter given high energy demand and the mental stimulation required to keep the dogs relatively content. Such demand cannot be met by regular staff. The longer the dogs wait in cages, the more frustrated they become.
The good news is you can help get them out of those cages just by sharing wonderful photos with your social media crowd, maybe they will do the same! It’s just a quick minute to feature a dog a day.
Be a hero for dogs in peril. Give a few minutes of your time. You can be responsible for saving a life – doesn’t get much more fun than that. Go, please do it now – you’re the best!

First off, let me note that I am definitely a supporter of the cause as bullies do make up a huge number of animals in shelters (and of those killed) – and they DO deserve to be saved.
But some of these numbers seem a little off.
First off, while we don’t really know how many pit bulls there are out there, based on shelter statistics it is unreasonable to think that the number is near 3 million. 5 millions is the low-side estimate I’ve seen recently and many have it as high as 8-10 million. Again, we don’t really know, so we’re quibbling a bit (and a LOT depends on how broadly ‘pit bull’ is defined), but 3 million seems really low.
Meanwhile, I HATE the use of the “only 1 in 600 finds a home” number. Given that we kill about 1 million in this country (a fair guesstimate), if that 1 in 600 were true, then that would mean that only 1,666 pit bulls were actually found homes each year. While I don’t know what the number is, that seems REALLY low, as we probably get more than 10% of that number just in Kansas City.
Just a thought. Again, really am a fan of the cause, but think we need to be as accurate as possible with numbers in order to come up with the most effective solutions.
Brent, thank you first for supporting the cause, and second, for pointing out that the numbers may be low. BtC4animals hasn’t the resources to tally the national pitbull population but must rely on the resources at hand. BBR offered their numbers along with their submission and our guest poster, Mary Haight, referenced reputable sources in “Why it Matters”, both the 2000 ASPCA survey and Petfinder.com. If you can offer hardcore statistics from another source, we absolutely welcome that information.
