Why It Matters

Service and companion dogs can make a huge difference in the lives of veterans dealing with issues ranging from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to life-altering injuries, but many veterans may not be able to afford them. These canines play a key role in the healing process, helping veterans recover from trauma and easing their transition back into civilian life. Many times, dogs can be rescued from local shelters and trained for this job.

Unfortunately, obtaining one of these dogs is not always easy. Paws and Stripes, an organization dedicated to helping veterans with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury, explains that the cost of a service dog for these issues may not be covered by insurance, and estimates that in order to obtain such a dog, a veteran would have to provide at least $10,000 to $30,000 or spend countless months seeking grant money to cover it. The expenses associated with obtaining and securing the necessary training for a service dog may make it impossible for some veterans to get the help they need. That’s why organizations to help defray these costs are so essential.

The goal of Dog Bless You’s Spirit of ’76 campaign is to help veterans in need by removing these financial barriers. For every 1,000 followers to its Facebook page through Independence Day (July 4th), Dog Bless You will donate a service or companion dog to a veteran in need. It’s a great way to give back to those who have served in the military.

According to Dog Bless You’s founder, Charlie Annenberg Weingarten:

Dogs are the guardian angels of the human soul, and few people need or deserve them more than those who have served our country. If we entrust dogs to help critical missions on the fields of war, we should entrust dogs to help take care of our men and women at home.

Help Dog Bless You reach their goal of pairing a veterans with service dogs today!
