Free Tilly

TillyTillikum, known as Tilly, isn’t a bad whale. He’s spent the last 25 years in captivity. He performs tricks for audiences. However, in 2010 Tilly inexplicably attacked and killed his trainer.

Animal Defenders International (ADI) claims that the tragic attack is a clear indication of the 22-foot, 12,000 pound Killer Whale’s frustration and a severely deprived environment. And they need your help to ensure Tilly gets rehabilitation so he might be able to go free.

Small pools are no substitute for the ocean. Let marine parks know that you refuse to endorse the use of captive marine mammals in entertainment.

Why it Matters

  • In a study of at least 134 orcas taken into captivity from the wild, most die before they reach their early 20’s, yet in the wild females live as long as 80 years or more.
  • Orcas in the wild travel over 45 billion gallons of water in a 24 hour period. An average marine park pool is 1/9000th that size.
  • Orcas in the wild are observed diving greater than 150 meters deep. Average marine park pool is 8 meters to 12.5 meters deep.

In 1998 Keiko was successfully released into the wild after rehabilitation. If Tilly were released and successfully rehabilitated back into the wild, this would be a key success in a much larger fight to end the use of marine animals in entertainment.
