Leaping Bunny
Each year, an untold number of animals continue to suffer and die in laboratories in the United States and Canada in tests for products such as shampoo, make-up, and laundry detergent. The Leaping Bunny Program, administered by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC), serves both consumers and companies by certifying cosmetic, personal care, and household products as ‘cruelty-free.’
The Leaping Bunny Program operates a strict standard that is backed up by audits to ensure its companies are not testing on animals during any stage of product development. It also offers the Compassionate Shopping Guide, the most up-to-date list of cosmetic, personal care, and household product companies that are not engaged in animal testing.

Why It Matters
The Leaping Bunny Program is administered by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). Established in 1996, it serves both consumers and companies by certifying cosmetic, personal care, and household products as ‘cruelty-free.’
By 1996, ‘cruelty-free’ shopping had become popular, but it was also confusing, sometimes misleading, and ultimately frustrating. Companies had begun designing their own bunny logos, abiding by their own definition of ‘cruelty-free’ or ‘animal friendly’ without the participation of animal protection groups.
In response, eight national animal protection groups banded together to form the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics. The CCIC promotes a single comprehensive standard and an internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo. They are working with companies to help make shopping for animal-friendly products easier and more trustworthy.
CCIC’s Standard is the only criterion to trust for cosmetics, personal care, and household products that are genuinely not tested on animals. That is because approved companies have done far more than simply issue a testing policy, which can so often be misleading. If a company is listed, it’s because it has been able to prove, according to CCIC’s Standard, that neither its products and nor its ingredients are tested on animals at any stage of development or manufacturing. In addition to being subject to random, independent audits, Leaping Bunny certified companies go through an annual recommitment process. Any company that fails to abide by CCIC’s strict criteria will be removed from the Compassionate Shopping Guide.
