Operation Blankets of Love

Operation Blankets of Love LogoShelter animals often lay uncomfortably on hard, cold cement floors. When given blankets, their behavior changes. They snuggle in, relax, feel safe, secure and warm. No longer cowering in a corner, tails wag and ears perk up ultimately increasing the animal’s adopt-ability.

Operation Blankets of Love (OBOL) collects and distributes blankets and pet-related items to comfort homeless shelter animals in California. You can do the same where you live! It costs nothing to spare an unused blanket and yet, with thousands of unwanted shelter animals put down each year, not doing so could cost a life.

ACT NOW

This task is hands-on and so very easy to do!

  • Collect blankets, towels and other soft items from around your house.
  • Call your local facility to arrange a drop-off on your way to work or school.
  • Do it with a friend and make it twice as nice!
  • Extra Credit: Print this banner. Snap a photo of you, it, and your donation at the rescue/shelter. Post it on BtC’s Facebook page and share the good you’re doing. You just might inspire somebody else!

Feeling more ambitious than that? Place a cardboard collection box at your office, school, pet or grocery store. Host a collection at your child’s next birthday party. Look at all the creative ways people support the mission of OBOL!

WHY IT MATTERS

Blankets are a comfort any time of year, but with the chilly change of season, these adoptable pets need you more than ever. Watch what happens once this dog is given a blanket.

A Word from Eileen Smulson
Founder and President
Operation Blankets of Love

“I never owned a pet until my husband, Brad, and I adopted Ginger. I could not picture Ginger lying frightened and sad on a cold hard cement floor, caged up in a shelter. I wanted to make sure every homeless pet had warmth and comfort by having a blanket to snuggle in while they were waiting to be adopted into a loving forever home.”

Eileen and Brad have since provided thousands of animals with blankets of love. They have worked with 413 rescue groups as well as 30 city and county shelters in California. They coordinate adoption events, educate grades K-12 about responsible pet ownership and work with emergency response and disaster relief agencies. We at BtC think that’s pretty heroic.

Let’s blanket our our own town animals with a bit of Eileen and Brad’s mission. And don’t forget to share your good deed!

BtC4animals.com never asks you to spend a cent, just a few minutes of your time.
It’s the greatest gift you can give.

What a beautiful yet very simple thing to do and sooo needed! I used to run and direct a no-kill shelter and we were fortunate enough to be able to get cots for all the dogs to sleep on and get off of the cold cement floor. But if we had not been so fortunate, we certainly would have appreciated “blankets of love” because it really makes a difference to these wonderful creatures that through no fault of their own end up in such facilities. It gives them comfort, warmth and a sense of caring they desperately need. Thank you Eileen and Brad for such a simple idea that will go a very long way!

      Kim,

Cots are a perfect solution, an idea I may borrow for another project I’m involved with. But yes, blankets are the next best thing and it’s SO SIMPLE. Thank you for sharing and for the enormous amount of work you’ve done for rescues.

I have a blanket that I was thinking about donating and this would be a perfect cause! Will any kind of blanket be accepted?

    • Hi Jackie,

I was at our local rescue facility this weekend and there was a sign at the counter asking for ANY soft items, including couch cushions! I don’t think the kind of blanket matters at all. In fact, one donor we know of is taking the time to knit one for a dog in need. How sweet is that? Of course, nobody has to be that committed. An unused but cozy blanket from that box in the attic works just fine. The dog who gets one from the attic or the knitted version will love each equally.

Thank you so much for your support!

That’s great to know! How wonderful that someone is knitting a blanket for a dog in need- warms the heart :)

Will start collecting blankets, towels, etc. from the rest of the family. We hope to drop them off at the local shelter soon!
