Let the Beluga Whale Sing!

Also known as the White Whale, or the Sea Canary for its melodious calls, the Beluga Whale is one of nature’s beautiful creatures in Alaska struggling to survive. Plans by the English company Anglo American to build the Pebble Mine would seriously threaten the future existence of this whale.
The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) and Robert Redford have established a petition telling Anglo American to leave Bristol Bay and its Belugas alone. Add your own voice; tell Anglo American you place more value on our fragile, living gifts of nature than big business profits!

Why It Matters
We need to speak out on behalf of Alaska’s treasured wildlife. The construction of the Pebble Mine would destroy the delicate balance of nature in Bristol Bay and Cook Inlet, home to two of only five remaining Beluga Whale populations. Local residents and Alaska’s Natives are opposed to this mine which would endanger not only the whales, but many of Alaska’s wildlife and natural resources.
Felt Soul Media’s Red Gold, shown at the 2008 Teluride Film Festival, takes a close look at Bristol Bay, the proposed mine, and Alaskans’ fears.
Recently, the Obama administration designated 3,000 square miles of the Cook Inlet as “critical” to the habitat of the endangered Beluga Whale. Bristol Bay is of great importance to the beluga, as well, in particular for the salmon runs upon which it feeds. The decimation of the area that would ensue following the construction of a mining site would be detrimental to the survival of the beluga.
Imagine a pit dug two miles wide, two thousand feet deep; in addition, the ports, pipelines, roads and dams built to support the mining activity – all in an area prone to earthquakes. Knowing this would be overseen by a corporation that has the bottom line in mind, it would be unconscionable to wait for disaster to happen. In the short term, the land, sea, wildlife and natural resources of Alaska’s untouched shores would all be at risk of being destroyed. Is a mine for gold and copper worth this destruction and loss of life? Once lost, we could never again hear the Sea Canary sing.
