Why It Matters
The Shelter Pet Project targets 17 million people who, each year, look to add a pet to the household but don’t know where to find one. If just 2.7 million of them decide to get a pet from a shelter, that many lives will be saved. A collaboration between Maddie’s Fund, the Humane Society of the United States and the Ad Council, The Shelter Pet Project is working toward drawing the number of needless deaths down to zero through laugh-out-loud ads like this one.
With the sharing of animal lovers like you, the Shelter Pet Project’s message is working. Four years ago, the number of adoptable (healthy/treatable) pets killed in shelters was close to 5 million. The Shelter Pet Project began in 2009 and has been one of the factors in reducing that number to less than 3 million. Shelter/rescue adoptions have been on the uptick, going from 27% of the market to 29% in the past two years. Euthanasia is down 10% since 2009. Pet adoption has been on the rise throughout the economic downturn, even with its record high foreclosures and job losses, according to The Shelter Pet Project’s site.
Get on board. Share this mission with friends, family and neighbors. Ask them to share it with their contacts. Use your social media channels to spread the word and include links to the clever, funny Public Service Announcements the Project has produced.
Take the mission to heart when you are looking for your next dog or cat. If we each talked about, shared stories or videos, and posted pictures of adoptables from the Shelter Pet Project just once a month for 6 months through social media, imagine the scope of that!
As dog or cat lovers, you are already part of a very large advocacy group for animals. The Shelter Pet Project is big. To change the notion that shelter pets are “bad” pets requires help from all of us. You can be part of a history-making movement by doing these few small things.
How about it, can you help take us to zero adoptable pets killed?
BtC4animals.com never asks you to spend a cent, just a few minutes of your time. It’s the greatest gift you can give.
