Why It Matters
Many stray pets do not find their way home because their owners simply do not find them. Increasing the number of pets returning home will not only create many more happy reunions but will also reduce the number of pets euthanized due to lack of space. According to the ASPCA, 2.5 – 3.5 million strays enter US Shelters every year. Less than 2% of cats and 20% of dogs are claimed by their owners.
HelpingLostPets.com allows a quick and easy search of pets everywhere. According to site developer Rob Goddard:
Our website is map based and totally free to use. When a pet is listed as lost or found, email alerts are sent to our members in the area. The more members we have, the more pets will get back home. Our immediate task is to grow the membership of our website. We are working to bring shelters on board to list their stray pets.
As of this writing, nearly 7,000 members have joined, as have 300+ organizations. Together, they have listed 14,569 lost pets. And it works to get the word out! After 3 weeks and a massive search effort, this Jack Russell Terrier named Bentley is back home. As you can see, his owner is very relieved and grateful.
